Isle of Wight, PO30 3LN.
Work undertaken on boats up to 25', pocket cruisers, one design keel boats, day sailers, dinghies, motor boats etc. Restoration and repair with emphasis on keeping as much original material as possible. New build and interior fitouts undertaken. Spar making with purpose made laminating jig, for example 18 spruce masts for the 22' Loch Long class. A typical restoration project would be the complete retimbering of an Aldeburgh Lapwing, a 12' Morgan Giles clinker dinghy. Replacement of damaged planks, refastening in way of leaks, recaulking garboards and stripping off all varnish and revarnishing.
Larger projects have included the rebuilding of a Z4 tonner, the design and build of a cabin top and cockpit for a Finness. A recent job has been the restoration of a 15' Slipper launch, powered by a rebuilt Stuart Turner engine this is a minimum length for a Slipper, I have plans to build one a few feet longer to the same design powered by an electric motor. On the same theme of small affordable boats with easy maintenance, using solid wood, construction of dory style dinghies are being considered.
I started my working life as a cabinet maker. I apprenticed to a firm working within Toughs boatyard, Teddington, consequently half our work was fitting out motor yachts. After this spell I worked for various firms and as a self employed cabinet maker. Being a keen sailor I decided to combine wood and sea and enrolled at the I.B.T.C boatbuilding collage 15 yrs ago. Since then I have worked on my own on a wide range of boats and occasionally collaborating with other boatbuilders.
